Island EMS/ Medacom Atlantic History
Prior to Island EMS, ambulance services on Prince Edward Island were operated by five (5) separate operators – Kings County EMS (Montague & Souris), Neil’s Ambulance (Charlottetown), Royal Ambulance (Summerside), West Prince Ambulance (O’Leary), and Rooney’s Ambulance (Alberton).
The Province of Prince Edward Island issued a Request for Proposals in December 2005 seeking a sole operator for a Provincial EMS System. Medavie EMS was the successful applicant and was awarded the contract, beginning operations in April 2006.
In 2011, Medavie Health Services began operating Medacom Atlantic based out of Charlottetown, providing Emergency Dispatch for various emergency services across the province including EMS, Fire, and Police. Medacom Atlantic began providing 911 service to the Province in 2012.
